Honoring Heroes This Memorial Day

“As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words but to live by them,” said the late President John F. Kennedy.1

This Memorial Day may we express our gratitude to the heroes and sheroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for this country in a way that honors them. While we get a day off to celebrate with barbecues and spending time with our family, we might also consider giving back.

Bustle offers several ways you can give back and honor our fallen heroes this Memorial Day:2

  • Volunteer at a local homeless shelter, soup kitchen or nursing home. While Memorial Day honors fallen heroes, we have numerous heroes who are unhoused or lonely.

  • Make a donation. You can also donate to any organizations that provide assistance to the families of fallen heroes. Some can include the Children of Fallen Soldiers Relief Fund, Gold Star Wives of America, or Got Your Back Network.

  • Visit and clean a memorial. Bustle notes that just weeding and cleaning around fallen soldiers’ gravestones can make a difference.
