Happy Veterans Day

Freedom is not free. It has come at the expense of the sacrifices made by the brave men and women in uniform.

The late poet, Maya Angelou, said “How important it is for us to recognize and celebrate our heroes and she-roes!”

Veterans Day was first celebrated as Armistice Day on November 11, 1919, marking the first anniversary of the end of World War I and honoring the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. After becoming a national holiday in 1937, in 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower changed the name from Armistice Day to Veterans Day.

Veterans Day is to honor and commemorate veterans of all wars, of which there are around 19 million U.S. Veterans as of April 2021.3 There are several ways you can honor the veterans in your community this Veterans Day:

·         Find a sponsorship opportunity, such as sponsoring your local community’s Veterans Day breakfast or parade.

·         Figure out how to hire and support veterans at your firm.

·         Hold a thank-you note campaign, encouraging your colleagues, clients, and their families to write notes of thanks to local veterans. You can then deliver the notes to your local Veterans Affairs Office.

To our veterans, we thank you for your bravery and service! And a special ‘thank you’ to some very special veterans, Don Coffin, Annie Young and Mike Ferber. Yesterday, these three veterans were honored by the Eagan Rotary and Eagan Kickstart Rotary Club at the Annual Veterans recognition event. Thank you for your service!
