Freedom and Liberation on Juneteenth

Juneteenth marks a momentous day in American history, one that celebrates and recognizes freedom and liberation for enslaved Black Americans. One of the ways Parade notes to celebrate Juneteenth is to learn the true history of the holiday that commemorates the emancipation from slavery.

The Emancipation Proclamation was officially signed January 1, 1863, however, enslaved Black Americans were not all freed immediately. On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the signing of the document that freed enslaved peoples, federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to ensure all those who weren’t told they were free were, in fact, freed. In 2021, Juneteenth, long celebrated by the African American community, became an official holiday.

Juneteenth combines the “June” and “Nineteenth” is also called Juneteenth Independence Day, Freedom Day and Emancipation Day and is celebrated with prayer, family gatherings, and parades. Some even celebrate it with a pilgrimage to Galveston.

Juneteenth symbolizes that oppressed peoples can experience freedom and liberation through courage, strength, and perseverance, but it also symbolizes how people are capable of enslaving people even when they are technically free.

May we find a way for freedom and liberation for all this Juneteenth.
