For lots of people, Halloween just isn’t complete without a heart pounding, sweat inducing, white knuckle experience. Children test each other’s courage with ghoulish goodies, like peeled grape eyeballs and cold spaghetti guts. Many families’ Halloween traditions include excursions to haunted houses, watching horror flicks (including the scary parts), and building Halloween tableaus designed to keep even the most seasoned trick-or-treaters on their toes.

All the chills and thrills beg the question: Why do we like to scare ourselves—and each other—silly? It’s human nature, according to some experts. People need to explore how much fear and anxiety they can tolerate. Being terrified is thrilling, but what’s really satisfying is the sense of accomplishment gained from confronting and conquering a frightening experience. Halloween gives you an opportunity to break away from your civilized daily life and explore your less-civilized nature.
